In the last two decades, statin use in the U.S. has increased nearly 80%. I like to have the conversation about cholesterol and liver health with my clients before they begin taking a statin, seeing as how high cholesterol alone, without other cardiovascular risk factors like high triglycerides and homocysteine levels, is not associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events. That being said, family history and a persuasive prescribing physician can replace worry with cautious acquiescence. On to the case presentation:
A patient presented with acid reflux that after several medications to alleviate, an endoscopy, herbal remedies and acupuncture, did not show any signs of relief. She finally realized that the symptoms presented shortly after beginning her statin. At low risk for coronary heart disease, I encouraged her to pause on the statin for 3 months while supporting her liver function with diet and nutraceuticals. Within a week without her statin, her reflux symptoms resolved and she is on a path to improved liver health and quarterly physician-evaluated lipid profiles.
